yummy!

Sharon says Thank God for her aunt and uncle who know all about making fun food without egg and dairy and such. She got her first taste of chocolate while cousin Anna's birthday cake was being made...and Uncle Martin eventually had to take the spatula away by force!

little punkin

You'd think i'd have a picture of her as a pumpkin to go with that title wouldn't you? She does have a very cute pumpkin outfit that she's been wearing, but i haven't taken any pictures. I will certainly get a picture of her in her actual Halloween costume and post that...
she's doing well. Got a new tooth today so i'm hoping that will help her sleep a little better.
We went back to the allergist today to see how she is doing since i've been off dairy for a month now. There is no doubt that her allergy is to dairy and that her system is much better off without it, so i'm learning new ways to eat...a challenge to say to least! Luckily we live in an age where there are some good soy creations (yogurt, pudding...) so hopefully she won't miss out on too much. Her allergy is severe but there is still hope that she will grow out of it in a few years...
And it is a huge help to have family that know all about special diets and allergies. Cousin Anna is happy to share all about a dairy free life and i think she's happy to have someone in the club with her.
Her therapies are going well. The OT and PT both shake their heads at her pretty frequently. If Sharon isn't in the mood to do something, you can just forget it! But then there are weeks where she just struts her stuff and blows them away...she is a funny girl! We're working hard at sitting up on her own and she's almost there. She isn't doing much by way of rolling from her back to stomach, but we all think that's becuase she really doesn't like being on her tummy so there is absolutely no incentive for her to get there! I'm predicting that she's going to learn how to move around from a sitting position and not from her belly but we'll see whether we'll "out stubborn" her there...
She's got great personality and LOVES her dogs and cats! They just make her chatter and laugh..
well, we'll get some costume pictures up her soon!
God Bless

pet therapy

Hello again! I wanted to share a fun story since i share so much of the heavy stuff...
We have cats and dogs as most of you know. Sadly, we are down to two black cats from the original three (one wandered off never to be seen again....). But, our remaining boys are quite attached to Sharon. In particular, our fat fluffy one, Nobu, has become part of Sharon's therapies. When the OT and PT come, he will show up from wherever he is and make himself available to help. He seems to know just where he is needed (sometimes on her right side, or in front of her or behind her...wherever we are trying to get her to reach, he goes). He takes his job quite seriously. Now whenever i have her on her "exericise quilt" he comes to see if he is needed. It's so cute and Sharon just loves him. He lets her grab whiskers, tail, clumps of hair...
He is such good incentive for her! It's kind of funny because he's not very "cat like" (doesn't understand stealth, daintiness, cat grace, doesn't like fish, he's just strange) and we've often wondered what his purpose is, but now we know!
Have a great weekend and hug your cat :)

Greetings from a wet NC. Warm and nice, but wet.
Sharon did some more travelling with us this past weekend to PA. We visited with Uncle Fred and his family (Fred talked with Sharon about the difficulties of PT and agreed with her that OT is easier to take...) and also went to my ten year college reunion (how has it been that long??).
Yesterday we saw the neurologist at Brenners Childrens Hospital. He is the same one we went to for a second opinion back in March. We have since decided to use him exclusively since the bedside manner of the other neurologist is...lacking, to say the least.
Anyway, he was very pleased with how Sharon is doing. He reviewed the MRI from two weeks ago. There is nothing new (that is good). He said that looking at the MRI, he is actually very impressed with how much Sharon is doing and how well she is interacting. The MRI definitely shows damage (the miracle/dream scenario would have have shown significantly less damage than the first one, since the first MRI had the potential to show a lot of swelling and bleeding that would have looked like brain damage). We asked him if he can guess what results the damage will have on her abilities and of course he can't really answer that. He said that he can definitely read that there is weakness on her right side, and speech/vocabulary may well be another area where she is going to struggle, but we can't be sure.
What he said to us a couple of times is this: SHE is going to be the one to show us what she can do, not an MRI.
We feel like we've closed a chapter on this book of Sharon. No more MRIs, CT scans, etc. In fact, we won't even go back to the neurologist for another year. There are no more answers to be had, just time to watch her grow and develop the way she is going to develop. Actually, we will do one more test on her in the next few months, but that doesn't have to do with her development. We'll be doing an extensive blood test to rule out any kind of blood disorder that could have caused the strokes (we know there isn't one, but it will be good to just rule it out completely and take her out of that "stroke risk" group).
I think the big challenge that awaits us is just the questions of friends and strangers. We are so thankful that to the casual observer Sharon looks typical so that we don't have to hear "what is wrong with her?" (yes, people are that inconsiderate). But, well meaning people are constantly making small talk with "does she sit up? Is she crawling?" etc etc. and i fear that those questions will become more difficult as she gets older and the delays are more apparent. We are just praying for the best ways to deal with these questions becuase we know that our example is where Sharon will learn her own defenses and acceptance of her situation....
Yet again I thank you for continuing to read this blog and support us. It means more than you can know!
love and bless
Jaye, RJ, and Sharon I.
